Consensus statement on COVID-19 and elective surgery
18 Mar 2021
The Royal College of Surgeons of England has released a joint statement with the Association of Anaesthetists, Centre for Perioperative Care, Federation of Surgical Specialty Associations, Royal College of Anaesthetists on surgery for patients who have previously been infected with COVID-19. This highlights the need for multi-disciplinary teams to consider the timing of surgery in relation to the severity of the initial infection; ongoing symptoms of COVID-19; comorbid and functional status; clinical priority and risk of disease progression; and complexity of surgery. This will help to prevent peri-operative COVID-19 infection and protect staff, other patients and the public.
We are grateful to the Chair of our Patient and Lay Group, Sue Denmark, and our Vice-President Tim Goodacre for their work as co-authors.
