The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) is calling for independent hospitals to collect and publish equivalent data to that which the NHS routinely provides on patient safety and clinical audits. The RCS has published a position statement setting out the changes to standards in the independent sector it believes are required to prevent a repeat of the harm caused by rogue breast surgeon, Ian Paterson.

Today the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) is calling on surgical teams and leaders in UK NHS and private hospitals to ensure they embed strong team-working across all of their services. This follows findings that, where rare problems occur in surgical practice, poor team working between surgeons is often a major factor. Analysis of one hundred surgical reviews over 10 years conducted by the RCS identified poor teamwork as an issue leading to problems in surgical practice in over three quarters (76%) of the reviews.

NHS hospitals continue to struggle to reduce long waiting lists which include over 220,000 patients that have been waiting more than six months for treatment, the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) has warned. There were also over 36,000 patients waiting more than nine months for treatment.

Trainee surgeons Ellen Ross and Leo Brown are celebrating after winning a highly prestigious UK-wide surgical skills competition. The talented duo, who were representing the North East School of Surgery, walked away with the title of 'Best Core Surgical Trainees in the UK', along with a prize of £1,500 to share, after taking part in the Royal College of Surgeons’ competition.

Northern Ireland Department of Health waiting time statistics published today (Thursday 28 February 2019) show there are now 21,477 patients waiting more than a year for inpatient treatment – a rise of almost 43.4% compared to December 2017. A further 94,953 are now waiting more than a year for an outpatient appointment in Northern Ireland. Analysis by the Royal College of Surgeons has found that, by contrast, there were only 2,237 patients waiting more than a year in England.

Royal College of Surgeons analysis of the latest waiting times data for Wales published today shows 9,000 fewer instances of people waiting longer than nine months waiting to start treatment at the end of 2018 compared to 2017– a reduction of 41%.
