Diploma in Special Care Dentistry - Part A

Exam overview

Part A of the Diploma in Special Care Dentistry (DSCD) consists of a written paper of 140 single best answer questions mapped to the seven modules of the curriculum.

Candidates may apply for the DSCD Part A all year round. However, applications must be submitted before the advertised closing date. The fee for Part A is £310

The DSCD examination changed format from 1 July 2019. If you are interested in sitting DSCD Part A or Part B please ensure you have read DCSD - Changes to Part A and Part B.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the award of the diploma all candidates must :

  • possess a primary dental qualification that is acceptable to the Council of The Royal College of Surgeons of England;
  • have complied with all the regulations, and have signed, in the presence of an officer of the College, a declaration of compliance with the ordinances of the College.
Exemptions

The College will consider equivalence for Part A where a candidate has completed another Certificate, Diploma or Masters in Special Care Dentistry. If successful, the candidate will be eligible to sit Part B directly.

Exam format

For April 2020

(NB this is for candidates who have started the DSCD programme under the previous DSCD Part A module assignments system and have completed and passed four of the seven module assignments):

Written paper consisting of 70 single best answer (SBA) questions mapped to the following three modules of the curriculum:

5. Provision of Comprehensive Oral Care;

6. Developing Services in a Community Setting;

7. Clinical Effectiveness.

From April 2021 onwards

Written paper consisting of 140 single best answer (SBA) questions mapped to the seven modules of the curriculum:

1. Oral Sciences of Relevance;

2. Knowledge & Understanding of Conditions leading to Impairment & Disabilities;

3. Behavioural Sciences & Sociology of Health, Impairment & Disability;

4. Law, Ethics and Health & Safety;

5. Provision of Comprehensive Oral Care;

6. Developing Services in a Community Setting;

7. Clinical Effectiveness.

Candidates sitting the new Part A examination for the first time must also sit Part B at the same sitting. Candidates have to pass both parts to be awarded the Diploma in Special Care Dentistry.

Syllabus

For candidates who have started the DSCD programme under the previous DSCD Part A module assignments system and have completed and passed four of the seven module assignments the Part A written paper will be mapped to the following three modules:

  • Module 6: Developing Services in a Community Setting
  • Module 7: Clinical Effectiveness

For candidates sitting the examination from April 2021 onwards the Part A written paper will be mapped to the following three modules:

  • Module 1: Oral Sciences of Relevance
  • Module 2: Knowledge & Understanding of Conditions leading to Impairment & Disabilities
  • Module 3: Behavioural Sciences & Sociology of Health, Impairment & Disability
  • Module 4: Law, Ethics and Health & Safety
  • Module 5: Provision of Comprehensive Oral Care
  • Module 6: Developing Services in a Community Setting
  • Module 7: Clinical Effectiveness

Following the postponement of the examinations of 15 and 16 April 2020, the DSCD Part A and Part B have been rescheduled to the dates above. Candidates who have already applied for the April sittings will be automatically transferred onto the October examinations.

Applicants are asked to email their completed application forms to dentalexams@rcseng.ac.uk. All applicants will be informed as soon as a rescheduled date for this examination is confirmed.

 

Completion Fee

There is a £230 completion fee for those completing an FDS Royal College of Surgeons of England diploma. This fee will be collected once you have passed the exam.
