Our mission and goals
To be a successful female surgeon doesn't always mean being famous or needing to be at the top of the class. In surgery, being one of the women who changes the percentage of female surgeons makes you an inspiration. The ratio of male to female consultant surgeons in the UK is approximately 8:1 and our Women in Surgery network is on a mission to improve that further. We aim to:
- Raise the profile of women in surgery.
- Work towards an understanding of the issues facing women in surgery.
- Encourage attitudinal change ensuring women are seen as an integral part of the profession.
- Provide advice, guidance and pastoral support for those women already in surgery or considering entering it.
- Showcase the varied lifestyles of female surgeons e.g. less than full time training and working.
- Support the Women in Surgery network.
To achieve these goals, we work with a number of related organisations and bodies to highlight the issues affecting women in surgery and to facilitate change in attitudes and practices to ensure that all of the best candidates can succeed in surgery. In addition to this, we work to ensure female surgeons are represented positively in the media and to as wide an audience as possible.
Membership of the Women in Surgery network is free and includes a range of benefits including information and advice on many topics affecting female surgeons, a directory of contacts and local and national events.
